Modified bitumen's mass and flexibility make it easier to detail cleanly around irregular curbs and closely spaced penetrations than a thin single-ply sheet, since the material can be worked and lapped generously at transitions without the seam-strength concerns that come with a welded single-ply detail in a tight space.
